In Conversation with Dr. Ddevika

1. What prompted you to choose this path in life and what has your journey been like?

My journey into wellness began early in life, deeply influenced by my parents’ dedication to yoga and meditation, as well as my grandmother’s spiritual guidance. However, it was my own pursuit of emotional, mental, and physical well-being that truly set me on this path.

Over the years, I found myself increasingly drawn to natural therapies, holistic wellness, and healing. Embracing these modalities has transformed me inside out. I believe that spirituality is about looking inward, and this perspective has profoundly helped me.

That said, the journey hasn’t always been easy. Healing and spirituality come with their own challenges. There are moments when the path feels overwhelming, and it’s important to recognize that even those on a spiritual journey experience emotions like anger and frustration. The difference is that you learn to introspect and approach these emotions with mindfulness, which brings a sense of peace and fulfilment.

Overall, my journey has been beautiful, and I’ve loved sharing it with others. My goal is to continue doing so, helping more people discover the transformative power of wellness and spirituality.

2. You work quite a bit with women, addressing their unique issues. Can you tell us why you chose this and what issues you believe women are facing more prominently?

I chose to work with women because I deeply resonate with their experiences. My own journey through various emotional, mental, and physical challenges—whether related to body image, motherhood, or overall well-being—has given me insight into the struggles many women face. This connection has allowed me to align with their energies in a meaningful way, offering support and understanding that brings relief to those who reach out to me.

One of the unique challenges women face is the multitude of roles and responsibilities they take on from a young age—being a daughter, sister, wife, mother, and often a career woman. Balancing these roles can lead to pent-up emotions and unspoken stress, much of which is influenced by upbringing and societal expectations. Unfortunately, women often prioritize everyone else over themselves, neglecting their own well-being. This chronic stress, emotional turmoil, and mental strain eventually manifest physically, sometimes in ways they don’t immediately recognize.

My goal is to help women understand the importance of caring for themselves emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually. By reconnecting with themselves, they can better manage the stress and challenges that life throws at them. This is crucial because these unresolved issues can lead to hormonal imbalances, gut problems, weight issues, and more—problems that start early and continue through menopause and beyond.

Although I’ve worked with men as well, primarily on health-related issues, my focus on women stems from a desire to address these deeply rooted challenges and guide them toward a more balanced and fulfilling life.

3. Can you share one of the biggest successes you’ve faced in your career and the biggest obstacle? How did you deal with both of these?

My biggest success isn’t tied to a single event or achievement but rather to the everyday moments when I can make a difference in someone’s life. Every time I help someone, every life I touch, that’s a success to me. Whether it’s a woman telling me how something she’s learned from my programs has positively impacted her life or how she’s managed to incorporate new practices into her daily routine—even if it’s just 80-90% of what we worked on—that feels like a win. Building a community of over 25,000 women organically, and seeing it grow, is another success I cherish. Each story, each connection, fuels my passion and keeps me motivated.

As for obstacles, I wouldn’t necessarily label them as such, but like everyone else, I have personal challenges that sometimes take precedence—whether it’s family, my children, or other responsibilities. These moments might require me to step back from my work temporarily. But I’ve learned to accept this as part of life. I don’t push myself too hard or dwell on these setbacks. I give myself time to process, maintain balance, and then pick up where I left off. I understand that life has its ups and downs, and I’ve made peace with that. My success stories keep me going, and when challenges arise, I move past them, knowing that things will eventually get back on track. This approach allows me to navigate both successes and obstacles with grace and resilience.

4. You work across a number of modalities and practices. Can you tell us about each one and what the biggest benefits of these can be?

I integrate several modalities in my practice, each targeting different aspects of well-being—mind, body, and soul. I’m an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, a Lifestyle Medicine Practitioner, a Yin Yoga Practitioner, a Theta Healer, and a Neuroscience Coach. These disciplines might seem varied, but they all interconnect, addressing the holistic nature of health.

Starting with Integrative Nutrition, this approach emphasizes that your primary nutrition encompasses much more than just the food on your plate. It includes aspects like your career, relationships, mental well-being, finances, home environment, physical activity, and spirituality. The food you eat is secondary, though still important. I create nutrition plans tailored to specific needs, whether for weight management, mental health, or overall wellness, always considering the broader context of my clients’ lives.

Lifestyle Medicine focuses on four pillars of health: emotional well-being, sleep, physical activity, and nutrition. Like integrative nutrition, this approach is holistic, emphasizing the interconnectedness of these elements in maintaining health.

Yin Yoga is another modality I cherish. It’s a beautiful practice that taps into your feminine energy, which we all possess, regardless of gender. Yin Yoga encourages slowing down and connecting with your inner self, helping you understand and process your emotions. It’s a powerful way to nurture your mind and body.

Theta Healing is a deeply transformative energy healing technique. It involves accessing the theta brain wave state to facilitate healing, often addressing deep-seated issues like childhood traumas, limiting beliefs, and patterns that no longer serve you. This modality is particularly effective when clients are ready and open to profound healing.

Finally, as a Neuroscience Coach, I bridge the gap between science and spirituality. With my background in medicine, I’ve always felt it’s crucial to connect the dots between these two realms. Neuroscience helps us understand the mind’s pathways and the importance of training the mind for overall well-being. Through this, I coach women to improve their mental, emotional, and physical health, providing them with the tools to lead more balanced lives.

Each of these modalities contributes to a holistic approach to wellness, helping individuals achieve a state of harmony within themselves.

5. What are some of the most powerful mindfulness techniques you enjoy working with and why?

When it comes to helping others on their journey to well-being, I believe it’s essential to provide tools that can be integrated into daily life—something sustainable, not just a temporary fix. The goal is for individuals to take control of their well-being, to be able to handle stress, practice mindfulness, and look inward with greater ease.

One of the mindfulness practices I often use, both personally and with my clients, is journaling combined with a gratitude practice. Being grateful every day, not just for what you have but also for what you wish to manifest, can significantly shift your mindset. Another technique I advocate is the use of affirmations—whether spoken aloud or written down—because they can reprogram your mind for positivity.

Tapping, or Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), is another powerful practice I employ. It helps release emotional blockages and is particularly effective for managing stress and anxiety. Additionally, I use Ho’oponopono, an ancient Hawaiian self-healing technique, which is incredibly powerful for cultivating forgiveness and healing deep emotional wounds.

Theta Healing is also a key practice I use, tapping into the Theta brainwave state to address deeper issues like traumas, limiting beliefs, and childhood experiences. This method helps in creating lasting change and healing.

Visualisation and chakra balancing are other techniques that I find immensely beneficial. Balancing and energising the seven chakras through visualisation, particularly using the third eye chakra, has been transformative for many of my clients, as well as for myself. It helps to align energy centres, promoting overall well-being.

Yoga, especially Yin Yoga, is another cornerstone of my mindfulness practice. It helps tap into the feminine energy we all possess, fostering a deep connection with oneself. Yin Yoga, in particular, encourages slowing down and introspection, making it a highly effective mindfulness tool.

While you don’t need to practice all of these techniques, they offer a range of options depending on your needs and circumstances. Whether you choose a combination or focus on just a few, the key is consistency. Regular practice is what brings about real, lasting change.
